Beneficiary schools are supplied with nutrient-rich, fortified porridge made from sorghum, maize, or oats, providing young learners with an essential start to their day.
Representatives from an in-school breakfast initiative supporting around 4 500 learners in the greater Kuruman area recently visited participating schools to assess the programme’s impact one year after its launch. The visits also aimed to deepen partnerships and ensure the programme continues to respond effectively to the needs of learners.
The initiative is implemented by Kathu Solar Park and the Tiger Brands Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education. It serves as a valuable complement to the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP), which assists learners in quintile 1 to 3 schools nationwide.
School leadership at Bankhara-Bodulong, Gaegake, Mahikaneng, Maruping, and Seupe primary schools reported noticeable improvements in attendance, punctuality, focus in class, and overall learner wellbeing. These benefits were particularly evident among children from economically vulnerable households.
According to Bankhara-Bodulong principal B.G. Magome, the programme has played a crucial role in keeping learners engaged in their education. “Without this initiative, we may have seen a rise in learner dropouts,” he said. “The breakfast programme ensures learners start the day nourished, motivates them to arrive at school on time, and helps even the most disadvantaged children manage their morning learning activities with greater confidence.”
Through the partnership, Kathu Solar Park’s beneficiary schools receive fortified porridges that are prepared by trained food handlers in hygienic, well-resourced kitchens. Meals are served using individual plates and utensils, allowing learners to eat in a respectful and dignified environment.
The porridges meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for essential micronutrients, helping to address nutritional deficiencies and support healthy development.
Kathu Solar Park and the Tiger Brands Foundation continue to demonstrate their commitment to learner health and educational success by ensuring that every child begins the school day with the nourishment needed to learn, grow, and succeed.
